1 Island Narrative

2 Narrative Narrative: a story, using the elements of plot Your story must involve the island you created for Social Studies. It must use the elements of plot. It must be between 1-2 typed pages (approximately 200 words per page). No more, no less! It is due Sept. 9. You will have all class on Tuesday to work on it, but you are expected to have worked on it prior to Tuesday! You will use Google docs and submit it to the class stream.

3 Elements of PlotConventionsExtra consideration The expository introduces the characters and setting. The conflict is clear to the reader. The reader can identify the protagonist and the antagonist. Rising action is relevant to the conflict and moves logically to the climax. The resolution/falling action gives the reader a sense of closing. The essay displays adequate command of all grade-level conventions of writing. Specifically, students are expected to demonstrate:  Proper capitalization  Complete and proper sentence structures  Adequate spelling (use a spell- checker)  Indented paragraphs  Correct dialogue punctuation  Consistent tense (if you start in present, stay there!) The exposition is particularly interesting and draws the reader in. The plot is unique yet logical. Word choice is sophisticated. The assigned paper length meets requirements and is neither shorter NOR longer. Punctuation and/or sentence structure is above grade level. NARRATIVE ESSAY WRITING GUIDE Columns 1 and 2 of this writing guide tell you, the writer, what you need to do to earn 85% on this essay. Any deficiencies in columns 1 and 2 will result in a grade lower than 85%. Incorporation of the elements in the third column can raise the grade above 85%. Also, in this case, I, your teacher, represent the reader. (This method of grading is compatible with the latest in rubric research.)

4 Exposition Characters Setting Protagonist: hero Antagonist: force against the hero Time Place Conflict Problem Must involve the protagonist ClimaxEmotional peak Rising action Falling action Resolution “Feels” like the end of the story
