Skills and Techniques Lesson 2 Intermediate 2 & Higher Physical Education

Lesson objectives… Cooperative learning task on general data gathering Analysis of identified weakness oClosed environment oOpen environment Homework feedback Breaking a skill down to gather data and identify weaknesses oModel Performer Movement Analysis Observation Schedule

Cooperative learning task on general data gathering

Cooperative Learning Task Get into a group of four Number yourself 1- 4 Read the answer provided – pay particular attention to the paragraph which corresponds to your number. Each person should decide whether their understanding is Each person should now join up with those individuals in another group who are of the same number as them. Re-read your specific paragraph Discuss as a group your understanding of the paragraph Return to your original group and feedback on your specific paragraph

Analysis of Identified Weakness

Stage Two (Specific Data Collection Analysis of Identified Weakness) Analysis of Identified Weakness Analysis Of Overall Performance

 Assess the accuracy of overhead clear in closed environment using hoop test.  Assess distribution of overhead clear during competitive game (open environment) using scatter diagram. (Specific Data Collection – Analysis of Identified Weakness) Analysis of Identified Weakness Analysis Of Overall Performance

 Assess the accuracy of overhead clear in closed environment using hoop test. Specific Data Collection – Analysis of Identified Weakness Instructions Move from base position to the back of the court Your partner should feed the shuttle high to the back of the court, opposite the hoop you are aiming for. Perform 10 overhead clears to each hoop, returning to base between each overhead clear. If the feed is poor, do not return the shuttle. Use a different colour of pen for each hoop so you can distinguish the shuttles.

 Assess distribution of overhead clear during competitive game (open environment) using scatter diagram. Specific Data Collection – Analysis of Identified Weakness Instructions Play a competitive game up to 14 with an opponent of similar ability. Each time you use an overhead clear, your observer should record it on the scatter diagram When marking OHC, do so with an (X) on the opponents court where they returned the OHC from. If the OHC wins the point record with a ( )

Homework Feedback

Breaking a skill down to gather data on subroutines

 Watch the video of the model performer to develop your understanding of the overhead clear  Using the video make notes on the purpose of the overhead clear  When would you use each overhead clear Purpose of Overhead Clear Attacking OHCDefensive OHC

By observing a model performer and using a movement analysis observation schedule you can break a skill down and identify its subroutines. By breaking the skill down into its subroutines you are able to identify each of the small movements that make up the skill Subroutines of Overhead Clear PHASE OF ACTIONFEATURES OF ‘MODEL PERFORMANCE’ PREPARATION Starts from base Tracks path of shuttle and moves towards place shuttle will be played from. While moving, body turns side-on to net Weight shifts onto back foot Racquet is taken up and back behind head Back shoulder drops Front arm balances racquet arm / tracks flight of shuttle ACTION Shoulder, arm and racquet are brought forward at speed to generate power Weight is transferred forward from back foot to front foot to coincide with shuttle impact Impact with shuttle is with open racquet face above racquet shoulder Action resembles throwing action Performer strikes ‘through’ shuttle and body weight continues to move forward RECOVERY Racquet comes down and across body in recovery phase Forward movement at end of stroke leads to ‘base’ and recovery of ready position

 Observed video of model performer to develop knowledge and understanding of the subroutines involved in overhead clear.  Broke overhead clear down into preparation, action, recovery using movement analysis observation schedule  Compared my overhead clear to that of a model performer using movement analysis observation schedule. (Specific Data Collection – Analysis of Identified Weakness) Analysis of Identified Weakness Analysis Of Overall Performance

Homework Due – Friday 22 nd November Question: Explain how you gathered general data. Structure of answer Introduction – Explain why it’s important to gather data. Two areas considered, area 1 court movement, area 2 Stroke Effectiveness Paragraph 1 – Describe how you gathered general data within the activity (open environment) that focussed on your court movement. Explain why the steps you took were appropriate. Explain how you ensured data gathered was valid and reliable. Paragraph 2 – Describe how you gathered general data within the activity (open environment) that focussed on stroke effectiveness. Explain why the steps you took were appropriate. Explain how you ensured data gathered was valid and reliable. Paragraph 3 – Explain what you discovered from the data. What did you discover to be a potential weakness, why did you come to this conclusion? Explain what your next steps will be.
