2 HU 300 Unit 9 Overview Popular Culture and the Humanities How does something become a trend? How can a technological innovation or new gadget become a part of our cultural myth? Popular culture is fruitful place to observe what we have learned this term. But first my two tourist slides of the week.

5 HU 300 Advertisers and media outlets use art, music, film, and literature in order to sell their products and promote their ideas.

6 HU 300 We can also see how items of popular culture seem to appeal to our morality and our definitions of happiness.

7 HU 300 In this unit, we investigate popular culture through a discussion of modern mythologies and a closer look at how advertisers work to persuade us.

8 HU 300 I want to ask now if there are any questions over the final project? Now is the time to ask because it is due tomorrow! I will spend as much time as needed on the final project, or as little time as needed.

13 HU 300 Listen to or read the discussion of Pop Artist Robert Rauschenberg after his death in 2008. Read about popular culture and civic engagement. The phone booth: an article of popular culture faces its decline and demise.

15 HU 300 Think back over the course of the last few days. Consider where you went and what you did. Now, try to remember any advertising you may have seen. These might be on typical settings, such as billboards or television. They may also appear in less obvious places, such as logos on clothing or in the background of a movie.

16 HU 300 What was advertised and where did you see it? Can you remember the images and the products being advertised? Is advertising effective? Why or why not? What does the pervasiveness of advertising say about our culture?
