ANDY WARHOL AND POP ART.  Andy Warhol was born August 6 th, 1928 in Pittsburg Pennsylvania.  Warhol was a very sick child and had a fear of doctors.

1 ANDY WARHOL AND POP ART

2  Andy Warhol was born August 6 th, 1928 in Pittsburg Pennsylvania.  Warhol was a very sick child and had a fear of doctors and hospitals. As a result he spent a lot of time stuck in bed at home. During this time he would draw, listen to music, and collect images of movie stars. (All of this had an effect on his artwork later.)  For college Andy went to school to study commercial art. WHO WAS WARHOL?

3  Warhol started his career in art designing advertisements for shoes and making album covers.  In the 1950’s Warhol started to make art to exhibit. He started to make Pop Art.  What is Pop Art?  Pop Art is art about or using images from POPular culture. POP ART

4  “What's great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. You can be watching TV and see Coca-Cola, and you know that the President drinks Coca-Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca-Cola, and just think, you can drink Coca-Cola, too. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking. All the Cokes are the same and all the Cokes are good. Liz Taylor knows it, the President knows it, the bum knows it, and you know it.” - Warhol POP ART

5  Pop art is important for several reasons:  First and foremost it challenged the traditional views of art  It changed what people viewed as art  It also made art reproducible  Andy Warhol essentially saw advertisements as art. Going to the grocery store was like going to an art gallery because all of the ads and logos that were everywhere. SO WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL WITH POP ART

6  Andy Warhol’s two major subject matters were celebrities (remember him collecting movie star pictures from when he was a kid) and brand logos. WARHOL’S ART WORK

11  The Factory was Warhol’s studio, his workshop.  It was also a popular social scene where musicians, movie stars, artists, and intellectuals would all come and hang out. WARHOL’S STUDIO

12  Andy Warhol coined the term “15 minutes of fame” when he said "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."  One art work from Warhol sold for $100,000,000.  At one point one of Warhol’s entourage attempted to murder him by shooting him.  Warhol died at age 58 after complications from surgery.
