1 “Meet the Teacher Night” Grade 5 Room 304-Ms. McCann Welcome Parents! I am happy to have your son/daughter in my classroom and I look forward to a year filled with a lot of learning and great friendships! Please take the time to complete Parent Survey (please leave on your child’s desk) and feel free to take ‘notes’ during presentation. Take home yellow “Home to School” notes.

2 A few things… *Please sign up for Parent Teacher Conferences. *Check folder, agenda, and district website. We have a class webpage and math webpage too!! * Look for newsletter/menu on Friday. *Studying is homework! Read each night for 20 minutes. Room phone # is: 897-7800 ext. 2304, but call office at 897-7800 ext. 2419 to ensure message is received during school day. Email: lmccann@csufsd.org or noteslmccann@csufsd.org Bring in a snack daily as our lunch is at 12:30 pm Notes for absences. Attendance is encouraged, but if your child is ill, please keep them home.

3 Grade 5 Curriculum Reports Cards will be issued on a trimester basis this year: November, March and June. Progress Reports TBD. Grading will also be changing: 4=90-100; 3=66-89; 2=45-65; 1=below 45. A ‘3’ means working at grade level. ELA CCLS and anthology; Math CCLS (Modules) implementation. Check engageNY or NYSED website or search Grade 5 NYS ELA/Math CCLS Students taking more ownership, group work, working independently— higher rigor. Math and Reading at least 60 minutes of each per day. Writing; Science/Social Studies (switch with Mrs. Snyder 3 x’s per cycle); Spelling/Grammar. Homework is assigned as needed, but your child has the opportunity to start/finish in class. Encourage reading at home and mastering Math Facts is a must—please work on this at home.

4 ELA Variation of genres (increase of non-fiction text) Responding to literature. Be exposed to variety of genres from wide spectrum of American and world cultures. Compare texts and writing pieces. Use details from text, locate answers. Partake in conversation and collaborate with various classmates. Upgraded units addressing and implementing ELA CCLS. Flexible grouping Guided Reading

5 Math Main Concepts: Using NYS Modules (on website), text, and supplements Operations and algebraic thinking Numbers and Operations in base ten to billions. Fractions!!! Measurement and Data (standard and metric) Geometry Problem Solving (PSS sheets due each Friday) Daily Math Review in folder for the year (spiraled)

6 School-wide PBIS Plan Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Students receive a PAWS ticket for weekly raffle that promotes positive behavior/monthly incentives Done to increase valuable teaching time so all students’ needs can be met. Phone call home for inappropriate behaviors/conference/meeting with Ms. Segal

7 Assessments NYS Assessments in ELA and Math (spring) Reading Selection Tests (weekly—day given will vary due to skill/story. Please reread story and study vocabulary) STAR Reading and Math Math Benchmarks (usually monthly) Reading Benchmarks 4 Writing Assessments (Expository, Descriptive, Narrative, Persuasive) Chapter Tests and Quizzes in all content areas. Change in Report Cards and grading this year. Report cards will be given on a trimester basis. Progress Reports to be determined.

8 Accelerated Reader AR Individual goals done with classroom teacher and librarian, Mr. Wiesmore. Students complete reading logs and are checked daily (yellow sheet) Various incentives given- This is a reward for students who read each day to meet their goal. This is set by Mr. Wiesmore, your child, and myself—so this goal is attainable! SSR from 8:05-8:25 READ AT HOME EACH NIGHT FOR AT LEAST 20 MINUTES!
