But this is imposing the values of those in power on the people, therefore takes significant effort and resources in the long term. Antonio Gramsci (Italian Marxist imprisoned during Mussolini’s rule) was impressed at how power was maintained without direct force. The values of those in power were adopted by the people through reinforcement of these values through education, media and religion.
