8 Gutenberg’s Printing Press The printing press is one of the most important inventions of all time. Prior to Gutenberg’s invention, all texts were copied by hand. Gutenberg's invention led to an advance in learning.

9 How Printing Changed the World Before printing, documents were suspect to being forged. Eyewitnesses and personal testimony were considered more reliable. During the Middle Ages, the Church could control nearly all literature…after the printing press religious ideas began to spread, changing the power of the Catholic Church forever! Printing made documents more authoritative than personal testimony. Hard to fake printed documents. Before printing, people relied on memory to store facts. Printing changed the concept of "fact" to "printed fact"; "show me in black and white."
