2 Foods vs. Non-Foods Welcome! Today we will begin discussing what the different food groups are and how they keep our bodies healthy.

3 Eating Eating the right food is very important to keep your body healthy. Junk food like chips and candy are not good for your body.

4 Eating It is suggested that you eat certain types of foods every day. Do you know what foods are important for you to eat every day? Let’s go to a website to find out!

12 Video 5. Vitamins and Minerals, Vegetables Two other items that are consumed often are fats and water. We will discuss those two items as well.

13 Grains/Carbohydrates In the video we learned that grains/ carbohydrates are foods such as cereal, rice, and bread. These foods give us energy.

14 Fats Fats, also give us energy but if we don’t use it fast enough it turns into fat in our body. Too much fat in your body is unhealthy. However, it is important to know that there are good fats and bad fats!!

15 Fats Good Fats Vegetable Oil Almonds Avocados Olives Hazelnuts Cashews Fat in some Fish Bad Fats Sugary foods Crackers Fat in Meat Popcorn Coconut Oil Butter Lard

16 Fats It is important to have fats in your diet, so don’t take them out completely. Just make sure you are eating the good fats every day and not eating a lot of the bad fats.

17 Proteins Proteins are foods like eggs, nuts and meat. Some proteins help your body grow bigger and stronger.

18 Proteins We call proteins like cheese and milk dairy products.

19 Proteins Have you ever heard of the word vegetarian or vegan? A vegetarian is someone who does not eat meat at all. A vegan is someone who does not eat animal products at all, including eggs, milk and butter. Some studies that scientists have done show that people who eat less animal products are healthier than people who eat a lot of animal products.

20 Proteins So, although you want to make sure to get plenty of protein in your diet, you do not have to do that by eating meat or animal products. What types of foods do you think will give you protein other than animal products ?

21 Proteins Beans Soy Whole Grain Bread Brown Rice Barley Legumes Lentils Tofu Nuts Seeds Nut Butter These are all very healthy proteins!!

22 Proteins If you do eat meat, all of the proteins we just discussed are still very good for you so make sure to keep those in your diet. Some meats are healthier for you than others. Most seafood is low-fat and packed with protein. Lean meat like skinless chicken is better for you than red meat, like steak.

23 Vitamins and Minerals, Fruits One of the most important types of foods for our body are fruits. Fruits help us stay healthy and fight diseases.

24 Vitamins and Minerals, Vegetables Another very important food for our body is vegetables. Vegetables also help us fight diseases and stay healthy.

25 Water The most important thing we can put into our body is water. You need water to keep you hydrated, keep your body clean, and to digest food.

26 Food for our Body Review We need to eat all types of foods to keep our body healthy. This is what we call a balanced diet. You should try to eat more fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates, while eating less sugar or bad fats!

27 Food and Nutrients All of the food items we have discussed today provide your body with nutrients that will help your body stay strong and healthy. All animals, including humans, need enough nutrients to keep our bodies healthy and happy.

28 Next Time Great job today! Next time we will discuss how to eat a healthy meal and we will learn what else we can do to maintain healthy bodies.
