1. The Legacy of Imperialism in Africa Most European colonies on the African continent had gained their independence by 1980. Unfortunately, the legacy of colonialism made the transition to self government difficult for many of these newly independent nations. Because colonial powers did not want their colonies to industrialize and compete with them, they had prevented them from developing domestic industries.

2. The Legacy of Imperialism in Africa The economies of many African nations are still almost totally dependent on the same cash crops that they had grown as colonies. Therefore, when the prices of these crops fall on the international market, or when there is a poor harvest, these nations suffer greatly. In addition to farming, many of these nations continue to sell raw materials such as lumber, iron ore, gold, and petroleum.

3. The Legacy of Imperialism in Africa Lack of industry and inadequate transportation and communication systems have made it difficult for many African nations to compete in the global economy. Some nations are extremely poor. Weak economies and tensions among ethnic groups have led to political unrest.

4. The Legacy of Imperialism in Africa Many countries have turned away from democracy in favor of one-party rule and dictatorships. Some countries have been torn by civil wars. The civil unrest and current struggles of many nations in Africa are a direct result 19 th and 20 th century imperialism. We will have a unit about the Independence Movement that takes place after WWII.
