1 Aims: To put ICT and the internet into context To remind ourselves of the risks / benefits of using the internet To share how children will be taught to use the internet safely in the junior years To stress that overall the Internet is a good thing! 8 Y4, 5, & 6 Survey 2012 (A) Internet use 100% of Y4, Y5 and Y6 have Internet access – of which, 88% (Y4), 81% (Y5) and 67% (Y6) had ground rules at home to use it. 76% of Y4 use the Internet more than once a week (18% use every day) 43% of Y5 use the internet more than once a week (29% use every day) 78% of Y6 use the Internet more than once a week (28% use every day)

9 Of those who use the Internet daily: 76% of Y4 use for 1hr or less (12% - 30 mins.); 19% of Y5 use for 1hr or less 17% of Y6 use for 1hr or less; 39% for 1-2hrs; 17% 2-3hrs [What ground rules do you have? What ground rules should children have for the Internet?]

10 (B) Discussion with parents about on-line experience 88% of Y4 discuss on-line activity with parents (same number as those who had ‘Ground Rules’ for Internet use) 76% of Y5 discuss on-line activity with parents (couple less than those who had ‘Ground Rules’ for Internet use) 39% of Y6 discuss on-line activity with parents (c. 2/3rds of those having ground rules) [Why so few discuss on-line activities with parents? What would encourage this dialogue / encourage children to discuss with parents?]

11 Who plays ‘games’ on line? 94% of Y4; 100% of Y5 and 94% of Y6 [More than ½ Y4’s, nearly ¾ of Y5s and 2/3 of Y6 play more than once a week … and nearly 1/3 of Y6s, ¼ of Y5s and nearly 1/5 of Y4s play daily.] Less than 1hr.: Y4 =71%; Y5 = 76%; Y6 = 56% 1-2hrs.: Y4 = 18%; Y5 = 14%; Y6 = 28% 2-3hrs.: Y4 = 6%; Y5 = 10%; Y6 = 11%

12 (D) Social networking 71% of Y4 use social network sites: 41% Moshi Monsters + ‘Other’; 12% Club Penguin + My Space; 6% Bin Weevils 90% of Y5 use social network sites: 48% Moshi Monsters; 43% ‘Other’; 19% Club Penguin 94% of Y6 use social network sites: 61% ‘Other’; 22% Club Penguin + Bin Weevil; 6% Facebook + Beebo

13 (E) Mobile phones 50% of Y6, 19% of Y5 and 6% of Y4 have a mobile phone  of which 56% of Y6s and 25% of Y5s use daily. Y5 & Y6 tend to use phones without parental permission and very few use access to social networks through their phone. But all use their phone to text. If something went wrong? Said - all would tell someone and some would not delete the message.

14 If something goes wrong at school while you are on the Internet what would you do? 94% of Y4, 95% of Y5 and 94% of Y6 would tell the teacher – of which 33%of Y5 and 22% of Y6 would turn off the monitor [Do you know AUP for using Internet at school? 100% of Y4; 90% of Y5; and 100% of Y6 Do you know ‘SMART’ rules? 100% of Y4; 95% of Y5; and 100% Y6
