Now music is done not just by monks, but church choirs made up of only males. Boys would sing the higher parts and men would sing the lower parts. These boys that would sing in church choirs were called Boy Sopranos

Music in the royal court: In middle ages, there was usually only one musician at each court, now there may be as many as 60 musicians (singers and instrumentalist.) There was competition here as well to have the best musicians between kings, princes, and dukes.

Where woman couldn’t sing in church, they CAN sing in the royal courts. Servants based on talent A Capella music is vocal music that is unaccompanied by instruments.

Sacred Renaisannce Music
The mass is a polyphonic choral piece sung in Latin that is split up into five sections: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei Masses always use the same words! The motet is a polyphonic choral piece sung in Latin.

Many of the composers in the Renaissance came from an area of Europe called Flanders Flanders was made up of the present day countries of Netherlands, Belgium and the northern part of France. We call them Flemish composers

Josquin Desprez : was a Flemish composer during the Renaissance that wrote motets, masses, and secular vocal music. Born in Belgium, but lived his life in Italy working for dukes and the Pope.

Giovanni Palestrina: was an Italian composer who wrote more music than any other Renaissance composer Only wrote sacred music 104 masses and 450 sacred vocal songs.

The Madrigal The most important kind of secular music during this time was the Madrigal A madrigal is a piece of vocal music set to the words of a poem that is usually about love.

Instruments in the Renaissance
Instrumental was still not as popular as vocal music, but it did become more important than in the middle ages. Instrument music was used most often for dancing. Many new instruments were invented during this time.
