Happy Pachy- Thursday Use your Word Parts List to determine the meaning of: 1.Photo 2.Auto 3.Chloro 4.Hetero 5.Troph

Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration

More talk about food… “-troph” means nutrition or feeding Autotrophs/Producers- Use energy from sunlight to make food. (Photosynthesis) Auto- means “self” –Autotrophs make their own food. Heterotrophs/Consumers- Get energy from food. (Cellular Respiration) Hetero- means “different” –Heterotrophs consume food from others.

Mmmm… Food!! Where do we get our energy? How does the play a role in our energy? Photosynthesis- the process by which light energy is converted to chemical energy.

Photosynthesis 6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + light  C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2

Location, Location, Location Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of plant cells. Pigments for photosynthesis are in the membranes of the disk shaped structures called thylakoids.

Photosynthesis in Action

Chlorophyll… Don’t you mean Bore-a-phyll?!?!? Pigment- structures that contain light- absorbing substances. –Pigments absorb some colors and reflect others. Chlorophyll- the main pigment involved in photosynthesis. –Absorbs blue and red light –Reflects green and yellow light The reflection makes plants look GREEN!!

Chlorophyll is a molecule that absorbs light energy. chloroplast leaf cell leaf chlorophyll is found in chloroplasts.

Back to Food… Breakin’ it down Organisms need protein, carbohydrates, and fats. They need to be broken down to release energy. To use this energy – we need to transfer the energy into ATP. This process is cellular respiration. C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2  6CO 2 + 6H 2 O + ATP

ATP ATP- adenosine triphosphate Energy is released when the bonds between the phosphates are broken. When the phosphate breaks off the new molecule is known as ADP (adenosine diphosphate)

Anaerobic vs. Aerobic Breaking down food WITHOUT oxygen present is known as anaerobic respiration. –Anaerobic means “without air” –PRODUCT: lactate or ethanol and carbon dioxide. Breaking down food WITH oxygen present is known as aerobic respiration. –PRODUCT: Large amounts of ATP.

Stages of Cellular Respiration –STAGE 1: Breaking down glucose Glycolysis –STAGE 2: Production of ATP Krebs Cycle Electron Transport Chain (ETC)

Location, Location, Location Where does this all occur? –In eukaryotes cellular respiration occurs in the powerhouse of the cell. – What is the powerhouse of the cell? In prokaryotes it occurs in the cell membrane

mitochondrion animal cell

Anaerobic Respiration Lactic Acid Fermentation –Muscle soreness Alcoholic Fermentation –Done by yeast and fungus –Prepares food and beverages

What’s the Point? The net gain from aerobic respiration is up to 34 ATP!!!!

Coincidence?!?!? Look at both the photosynthesis and cellular respiration equations… What did you notice???? Photosynthesis 6CO2 + 6H2O + light  C6H12O6 + 6O2 Cellular Respiration C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP WEIRD!!!

The reactants in photosynthesis are the same as the products of cellular respiration.

It’s All About the Light Did you know the sun gives off a “ray” of colors – not just one! All colors of ROY G BIV are in light. R-red R-red O-orange O-orangeY-yellowG-greenB-blueI-indigoV-violet
