2 Editing #1 This is very easy…if you have written a rough draft #1.

3 You need these things: Orange Stamp Sheet Pen or pencil 2 different colored markers SILENCE If you do not have ATLEAST 3 pages written or 1 ½ typed you will work on your essay and edit for homework. ◦ This is your ONLY option for today. ◦ You will show me an edited draft at the beginning of class tomorrow-2.11.11.

4 MLA Format Write this down: Your Name Mrs. Nemec English II- (class period) 9 February 2011 This is important and necessary to your paper

5 Intro. Using one of your markers, highlight the first sentence. ◦ Does it start in the middle of your memory? ◦ If someone read it could they draw an accurate picture of the scene around them? This is the way to start your essay.

6 Intro. continued… Read your first paragraph. Using your pen/ pencil underline: ◦ The characters ◦ The event ◦ The setting All of these things should be in your intro.

7 Body paragraphs Using your pen/ pencil number your body paragraphs ◦ Do your paragraphs “flow” into one another? ◦ Do they change when the scene or topics change? ◦ Is there a new paragraph when the speaker of dialogue changes?

8 Dialogue Read through your paper. Take a marker and highlight your dialogue. You should only have 4 to 5 sentences of dialogue. If you have more than 4-5 lines, pick the most important/ most powerful lines of dialogue to keep.

9 Conclusion Read through your conclusion. ◦ Circle anytime you use the words: courage, relief, personal growth, regret or change in belief.  If you use these words more than twice try to find another way to say it. Highlight the last sentence of your essay. ◦ Does it give your paper a sense of finality and closure?

10 Extras After you have read through your paper, circle to 2 places where you need to add in more detail. ◦ Remember detail should incorporate the 5 senses (taste, touch, smell, hear and see) ◦ Make sure you have at the least-Circle and Identify these, please.  1 simile  1 metaphor  And 2 other literary devices.

11 Rough Draft 2: By Monday, this paper should be corrected, typed, double spaced and ready for a 2 nd editing. (2 pages)
