LIPID METABOLISM
2
Recall the structures of storage lipids
3
Fats and oils --storage forms of C and energy-- accumulate in lipid bodies Other sources include diet and new synthesis.
4
To be metabolized, fatty acids must be “mobilized” (released from triglycerides) Epinephrin, glucagon, catacholamines induce activation of lipases to mobilize lipid in fat bodies Dietary lipid Is mobilized in the duodenum by pancreatic lipase (C1, C3) and other lipases (C2).

Summary Triglycerides are hydrolyzed to fatty acids plus glycerol. Fatty acids are activated by attachment to CoA and Import into the mitochondria. The oxidation of fatty acids involves the ß-oxidation pathway. The oxidation of fatty acids produces a lot of ATP (and some H 2 O).
