Background Information In order to inform the writing of a new school food policy we decided to consult parents in order to gain their opinions about all aspects of the way we deal with food in school. We did this through a healthy lifestyle questionnaire. 270 questionnaires sent out. 181 returned.

Concerns held by parents about what their child eats at lunchtime.
Variety of meal provision. The amount eaten by child – is it enough? To actually know what the children are eating. Allergies. How healthy is the food? Is Halal food available for those who want it? Child has Friday meals- are they always the same? Child complains about lack of choice. The variety of provision for vegetarians.

Actions taken by school as a result of the Healthy Lifestyles Questionnaire.
Year 2 cricket tournament. 2 new after school clubs this term – Amazing Brain and Cricket. The implementation of a new improved P.E scheme for all year groups. Rewriting of food policy, to include; -more practical food handling/cooking in school. -greater emphasis on children understanding and choosing a balanced meal at lunchtime, including the use of ‘balanced meal’ placemats for packed lunch and school dinner children. -the continuation of school provided party food for religious celebrations, however, this is now all provided by our school cook to ensure safety of ingredients in terms of allergies and good nutritional value. the continuation of ‘birthday treats’, however, there is now a list of suggested, acceptable treats to aid parents when purchasing these items.
