1 The system of education
in the USA

2 The system of Education in different U.S. states has its peculiarities. Each state makes its own laws for the education system of this area. The Committee that takes control of a school system is called the Board of Education. There are two kinds of school in the United States of America: public schools and private schools.

3 One shouldn’t confuse American public schools with British public schools. In Great Britain private schools are traditionally called public. They are not financed by the Government and education in them is not free. In America the money for public schools is given by each state, so education in these schools is free. The system of private schools is very popular in the USA. The cost of education in these schools varies and not each family can afford it.

4 Education in the USA is compulsory for children from 6 to 16-18, depending on the state.

5 Preschooling is optimal
Preschooling is optimal. There is a network of nursery schools and day-care centres where children are looked after while their parents are at work. The School system has two levels: elementary (primary) and secondary (high). A class of pupils is called a grade in the USA.

6 Elementary schools give the basic knowledge
Elementary schools give the basic knowledge. Pupils are taught to count, read and write, draw, sing and dance. In some schools foreign languages are not in schedule.

7 Secondary schools are usually named high schools and their pupils are called students. Marks given to students for their work are called grades. Pupils get A,B,C,D. A- for excellent school work, D-for poor work. Students study a wide range of subjects which cover exact, natural sciences and humanities.

8 In some schools students can choose between woodwork, metal work, sewing, typing, shorthand and etc. They can join various school bands, chorus, sport clubs and so on.

9 After high school young people either start working or enter colleges and Universities. The cherished desire of any U.S. school leaver is to enter Harward University (situated near Boston), the most prestigious educational establishment in the USA.
