2 Young Turks The Armenian Genocide began with the young Turks The group came about because of the absolute ruler Sultan Abdul-Hamid. The Young Turks were upset about the continual down fall of the Ottoman Empire They secretly worked to overthrow the rule of the autocratic, Sultan. When the ottoman armies supported the Pan Turk movement they gained public support and their intervention was demanded to suppress the counter- revolution in April of 1909

3 The Committee of Union and Progress The committee of Union and Progress was the center of the young Turks They threatened to undo the fabric of the multi- ethnic and multi-religious society. The CUP gained political power by bringing the parliament completely under their influence

4 The Continual Spread To continue spreading the Turkish rule throughout the Ottoman Empire and to expand the lands. The CUP came up with a secret plan to exterminate the Armenian populate – They Armenian population was so wide that they covered important land and the Cup thought that the land would be more of a strategic value to the Pan – Turks goals

5 Armenian Genocide Although the Ottomans forced their way into Russia and Iran in 1941, they did not consist of permanent expansion. – But, It did help keep the Ottomans allies in focus The Armenian Genocide was put into play in the first year of the War. – After all the deaths, the CUP used the elimination of of the people as a way to fulfill the nationalist program which focused on the financial power and gave the Turks move control over economics

7 Enver Pasa and his Part Enver Pasa was one of the first Pan-Turks – He joined the CUP when he was reassigned to the Third Army in Macedonia – He gained the aristocratic title Pasa after he marched troops into Constantinople and made Abdulhamid step down. Making the government function under CUP rule. – He was also the Leader behind the Armenian Genocide along with Jernal Pasa He controlled the deportations and exterminations of the Armenians

9 The CUP defeated the Ottomans at the end of World War I. They were threatened by their allies to hold them responsible for the war crimes Some of the CUP leaders fled from Turkey while the rest went underground Many of them were trialed and killed The post-war Ottoman government has tribunals in 1919 to hold testimonies about the Genocide and War – Started a clandestine group that went out and tried to track down the other leaders and kill them
