3. back to menu This shows the main screen of fOCUS II. From here, you can access all the files and functions of the software Viewing files *Click the left mouse button or the right cursor key to see the next step in ‘viewing files’

4. The highlighted area is the collections column Clicking on the Methods file icon at the top shows, in the main window, all the files in fOCUS II Clicking on one of the collection icons below shows all the files in that collection back to menu

5. Clicking on the up-down arrow box next to filter shows a pop- up menu Clicking on any item in the menu shows just files of that type in the main window Clicking on all shows all file types

6. back to menu Double- clicking on any file opens it The highlight shows an example of a video file Video files open into the video viewer

7. back to menu The highlight shows the control bar for the video Clicking on the loudspeaker icon opens the volume control The right facing arrow button is the play/pause button The button on the slider can be used to go to a specific place in the video The right hand buttons are frame-by-frame controls

8. back to menu Text files open into the html viewer There is scroll bar on the right The back and forward buttons let you view files that you have already opened The index button gives access to all the text files

9. back to menu There are text and audio help files for every function in fOCUS II. They can be accessed from the help collection and the help? icons The index button on the help window also gives access to all the help files

10. back to menu Click on the title bar of a file to drag it to another part of your computer screen so that you can read it while you use other functions *This is the last step in ‘viewing files’ - click below to return to menu

11. back to menu event-sampling To code a video using event- sampling, click on a video file, drag it to the code box and drop it in The video will then open into the coding tool window *Click the left mouse button or the right cursor key to see the next step in ‘event-sampling’

12. back to menu This shows the video opened into the coding tool Before coding can start, a new record has to be set up To do so, click on the new record button

13. back to menu First, type a title for the record into the record name box Leave the time sample check box unchecked To select an installed coding scheme, click on the small up- down arrows in the scheme box to open the scheme menu [Clicking on new scheme opens the scheme editor for creating new schemes]

14. back to menu Click on one of the installed schemes in the scheme menu to select it Click on create to create the coding record and go to the coding tool

15. back to menu Find the first event that you wish to code by using the video controls Click on the appropriate code in the scheme box This creates an entry in the record, shown in the centre of the coding record frame Continue in the same way to code further events

16. back to menu To add an annotation to an entry in the record, click on the entry to select it and type the annotation into the right hand box To edit an entry, select it and then either click on another code, edit the annotation or click on delete entry as appropriate To replay an entry, double- click on it

17. back to menu To add further information about your record, you can enter text into the abstract box Once you have finished coding, clicking on save and close closes the coding tool and saves your record so that it can be opened from the fOCUS II main screen *This is the last step in ‘event- sampling’ - click below to return to menu

18. back to menu time-sampling To code a video using time- sampling, click on a video file, drag it to the code box and drop it in The video will then open into the coding tool window *Click the left mouse button or the right cursor key to see the next step in ‘time- sampling’

21. back to menu Set the coding interval for the desired sampling rate by using the slider or the right-left arrows. The interval set is shown in the right-hand box Click on create to set up the new record and go to the coding tool

22. back to menu Click on start sample to play the first time sample When the sample has played, click on the appropriate code to make an entry in the record and play the next sample
