1 The Road to Revolution

2 Causes: Britain began to compete with France over the fur trade in the Ohio Valley French and Indian WarFrench and Indian War (1754 – 1763)

3 The War Begins  George Washington brings a letter to the French demanding they leave the Ohio River Valley. –French refuse.  Washington launches attack from Fort Necessity, but loses.

4 North America before the French and Indian War

5 Native Americans Involvement  Though many are divided, most Native Americans choose to side with the French. –Better trade relations –French developed friendly relationships with Natives –Most thought French would win

6 Events of French and Indian War  Britain loses many of the early battles.  William Pitt becomes Prime Minister of England. –Under his leadership, England begins to turn the tide.

7 War Comes to an End  Britain overtakes the Ohio River Valley and now looks to take over French territories in Canada.  Britain has victories in Quebec and Montreal, which ends the war.

8 o Britain gained Canada and all of the French land east of the Mississippi River.  Spain gave up Florida to Britain.  England now has a lot of DEBT from the war. Treaty of Paris was signed in 1763

10 The Proclamation Line of 1763  Colonist felt that England was attempting to control them  England wants to avoid Indian trouble  Colonies were angered over idea that they must pay for cost of war and British troops now

12 Navigation Acts 1650-1763  Restricted colonial trade, manufacturing and shipping to other countries  Colonists smuggle and disregard Acts

13 Sugar Act 1764  Tax placed on sugar and molasses because colonists are British subjects  Colonist protest and smuggle sugar and molasses

14 Quartering Act 1765  Required colonies to provide British troops with quarters and supplies  Colonial assemblies vote to refuse to supply British soldiers

15 Stamp Act 1765  Any item that was made of paper required a stamped tax payment to be made  Colonists argue “taxation with representation”, Stamp Act is repealed

17 Townshend Acts 1767  Tax on glass, lead, paper, paint and tea  Colonist smuggle goods, boycott British goods, and fight with British troops

18 Boston Massacre   The Boston Massacre was the killing of five colonists by British soldiers on March 5, 1770.   It was the culmination of civilian-military tensions that had been growing since royal troops first appeared in Massachusetts in October 1768 to enforce the heavy tax burden imposed by the Townshend Acts.

21 Tea Act 1773  Tax on tea, it is a plan to bail out East India Tea company through tax on tea  Boston Tea Party and smuggling of tea

22 Boston Tea Party, 1773   To protest the tax on tea, Colonists dresses as Mohawk Indians dumped 342 chests of tea overboard.

25 Intolerable Acts 1774  Response to Tea Party, assembly and town meetings dissolved, port of Boston closed,and British tried in England  Militias form, colonies send representatives to 1st Continental Congress meets and starts colonial boycott
