2 OVERVIEW PURPOSE OF PROJECT PROGRESS TO DATE REPORT FORMAT NEXT STEPS AND SCHEDULE HOW CAN YOU HELP? DART SYSTEM

3 PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT To develop an annotated bibliography on emission reduction techniques (ERTs) available to reduce emissions from the burning of agricultural residues and wildland fuel.

4 PROGRESS TO DATE Kickoff meeting April 30, 2003 (Phoenix) Internet search for reference materials List of initial contacts Telephone calls to contacts

5 INTERNET SEARCH Keyword searches performed prescribed burning wildland fire agricultural burning field burning Accessed over 80 Internet sites 11 Federal/US 16 State 2 Canadian 14 Other 38 with “no lists” Academic publications

6 INTERNET SEARCH Sites included: BLM Bureau of Indian Affairs EPA Joint Fire Science Program US Forest Service USGS State (Air, Natural Resource, Environmental, and Forestry Departments) Obtained lists of over 500 potential references

7 INITIAL LIST OF CONTACTS List of over 220 names/agencies Agencies represented include: Farm Bureaus State agencies (ag, forestry, air, environment) and STAPPA/ALAPCO University departments Extension services Private/commercial groups (e.g., Plum Creek Timber Company, Oregon Seed Council) PNW Research Station Rocky Mountain Research Station

9 REPORT FORMAT Annotated Bibliography Index Annotations References Summary Table

10 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Index –Organized by fuel type, then by emission reduction technique –Show available references Author Multiple references by same author keyed with number »  Example Darley (1) Darley (2)

11 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY Annotations –Sorted by author –Individual references –Annotation contents Fuel type Emission reduction technique Emission reductions achieved Caveats

12 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY References –Sorted by author –Hard copy where available –Online address where applicable –Indicate if published or unpublished

13 SUMMARY TABLE Organized by fuel type then by emission reduction technique Information to be included: ERT type ERT treatment type ERT effect on emissions Scope of study Age of study/report ERT effect on resources Study reliability, replication potential, citation frequency

14 NEXT STEPS AND SCHEDULE Contact identified individuals (May and June) References Additional contacts Review references cited through Internet search (May and June) Obtain references (June and July) Create draft report (July and early August) Annotations Summary table

15 NEXT STEPS AND SCHEDULE (concluded) Submit draft annotations and table to task team for review (mid-August) Revise draft (late August) Present draft report at September meeting Revise report (October and November) Submit final report at December meeting

16 HOW CAN YOU HELP ? Check your files for any relevant references Send to: Kenneth R. Meardon MACTEC Federal Programs P.O Box 12077 5001 South Miami Boulevard, Suite 300 Research Triangle Park, North Carolina27709 Provide timely review of material

17 Document Archive and Retrieval Technology (DART) System Easily convert large amounts of paper and other hardcopy documents into an organized electronic filing cabinet Sophisticated information retrieval capabilities DART has a document index that is searchable by multiple fields.

18 DART (continued) DART fields can be easily customized. DART allows customized searches and reports. Documents incorporated into DART will be an exact image of their hard copy counterparts. DART allows full text searches within documents.

19 DART (continued) DART provides navigational links within each document. The DART user interface is easy to use with minimal steps required to retrieve a document DART allows for inclusion of maps, images, and other graphics within the document.

20 DART (continued) DART allows for retrieval of documents based on geographical areas at the facility through a facility map interface. DART has built-in functionality to allow users with the correct permissions to add new documents to the database. DART is capable of running on both a File Server and Web Server and has the ability of being CD-based if so desired.
