5 UAS CHALLENGE. What’s the UAS Challenge? Undergraduate students design, build and test-fly an autonomous unmanned aircraft system to meet a specific scenario and mission, e.g. Providing rapid and assured humanitarian aid to inaccessible/dangerous locations. UAS in numbers 2015 inaugural year 14 undergraduate teams 30 judges, scrutineers and volunteers 5 winning teams across 8 categories More information at www.imeche.org/UASC www.imeche.org/UASC © Peter Jones Photography

7 RAILWAY CHALLENGE. What’s the Railway Challenge? Mixture of teams: engineering students studying at a UK university and apprentices working in industry. They design and manufacture a miniature (10 ¼” gauge) railway locomotive according to specific rules and technical specifications. The 2015 competition weekend took place at Stapleford Miniature Railway in Leicstershire. Visit www.imeche.org/railwaychallenge for more information www.imeche.org/railwaychallenge © David Shirres

8 RAILWAY CHALLENGE. Locos are assessed in six track-based challenges: 1) Energy Efficiency Challenge 2) Energy Storage Challenge 3) Traction Challenge 4) Ride Comfort Challenge 5) Noise Challenge 6) Maintainability Challenge Teams also have two presentation challenges: 1) Design Challenge 2) Business Case Challenge © David Shirres

9 DESIGN CHALLENGE. What’s the Design Challenge? This competition is for first year undergraduates to expose them to the ‘real world’ of engineering. It was set up to address the complaint that so many businesses have of hiring graduates with theoretical knowledge but no practical experience. The DC competition comprises four main elements. 1)Design, Make, Test, Compete 2)Presentation 3)Poster 4)Peer Review The Design Challenge has been successfully established in three UK regions: North West Greater London North East Each region has its own competition from which the winner and runner-up are put through to the National Competition in October.
