DO NOW Take out completed draft of body paragraph #1 Copy homework

Make a Key Create a key using highlighters and colored pencils: Transition (TR) Topic Sentence (TS) Sentence starter to introduce source (SS) Source (S) Cite or Textual Evidence (TE) Explanation of quote in your own words (EQ) Explanation of how the reason supports the benefits or drawbacks (E) Concluding sentence (CS)

Directions Respond to the following yes/no questions as you reread your paragraph. If you respond yes to a question, you will use your key and highlight that required element in your first body paragraph. If you respond no, you will make a note to add that missing requirement to your revision due tomorrow.

Directions Continued 1. Do you begin with a transition (TR) word that starts your first body paragraph? 2. Do you have a topic sentence (TS) that states your first reason? 3. Did you begin your citation or quote with a transition (TR) word (for adding examples)? 4. Do you have a sentence starter (SS) before citing your textual evidence that introduces your source (In the article…)? 5. Do you cite your source (S)? 6. Did you cite specific, strong textual evidence (TE) from the article, story or outside source? 7. Do you include an explanation (EQ) of your quote in your own words? 8. Did you include an explanation (E) that shows how and why the evidence proves your reason? In other words, do you explain how your quote proves that animal testing is beneficial or a drawback? Be careful not to state your opinion or use first person. 9. Do you begin your conclusion with a transition (TR) for concluding or summarizing? 10. Does your concluding sentence (CS) tie back to your position, use a convincing or persuasive tone, and summarize your key points?

Self-Reflection Respond to the following questions on a sheet of lined paper: 1. What areas need improvement? Why? Be specific and use highlighting activity to help with explanation. In other words, what will you edit and then revise in your second draft?
