5 What A simple technique for recognising when hazards have built up to become a serious threat to you and others around you Why It is important to know how many problems you are facing, how serious they are, and how you can control them How By learning how to quickly identify hazards and define ways for maintaining control

9 The Rule of Three in Use PAUSE and think about the hazards around you IDENTIFY your AMBERS STOP if you have 3 or more AMBERS or any REDS RECOGNISE what you can change RE-ASSESS to see if you can continue safely

10 The Mountain Trip Never driven through this particular mountain route Weather forecast was for heavy rain in the mountains Planned to leave work at 15.00 to drive in daylight A Family decided go to the mountains for a weekend. To avoid Friday traffic they chose the route they never had never taken before. This is why they made sure they had a plan so not to drive in the dark.

11 The Mountain Trip Never driven through this particular mountain route Weather forecast was for heavy rain in the mountains Planned to leave work at 15.00 Did not leave until 16.00, picked up family & caught up in traffic

12 The Mountain Trip Due to leaving city late reached the mountains in darkness The route has proven more difficult than expected: winding road, changes in elevation, blind summits, and steep drops offs in combination with darkness and bad weather Verge lines, heavy rain onto windscreen, terrible visibility
