5. There are four types of phrasal verbs
There are four types of phrasal verbs. Types 1, 2, and 3 can be literal or idiomatic. The verbs of type 4 are nearly always idiomatic.

6. TYPE 1 : VERB + PARTICLE (no object)
used literally :
He put on his coat and went out.
Sit down.
She walked right past the store without noticing it.
used idiomatically :
I didn’t put enough wood on the fire and it went out (= stopped burning).
Their marriage didn’t work out. (= didn’t succeed)
Our plans fell through (= failed).

7. TYPE 2 : VERB + PARTICLE + OBJECT (separable)
literally :
I put up the picture.
idiomatically :
I put up my sister for the night (= gave her food and a place to sleep).
=> Type 2 phrasal verbs are separable. The object (noun or pronoun) can come between the verb and the particle.
I put the picture up.
I put it up. (if the object is a pronoun, it always comes in between)
I put my sister up for the night.
I put her up for the night.

8. TYPE 3 : VERB + PARTICLE + OBJECT (inseparable)
literally :
She came across the room.
I’m looking for Harry.
idiomatically :
She came across an old friend while she was out shopping (= found by accident).
She takes after her father (= resembles in features, build, character)
I’ll look after it for you. (= care for)
=> Type 3 phrasal verbs are inseparable. The object always comes after the particle.

9. TYPE 4 : VERB + PARTICLE + PARTICLE
I get along very well with my boss.
I’m looking forward to it.
How can you put up with that noise ?
=> Type 4 phrasal verbs are nearly always idiomatic. The object cannot change position.
