2 What is a Phrasal Verb?  Main verb + particle  A particle is usually a preposition.  In most cases, the addition of a particle changes the meaning of the main verb.  She’s going to take her poster  She’s going to take back her poster.  She’s going to take down her poster.

3 Same Meanings  In some cases, the meaning of the phrasal verb is the same as the meaning of the main verb.  I’m going to call my grandma.  I’m going to call up my grandma.  Clean the kitchen.  Clean up the kitchen.

4 Multiple Meanings  Many phrasal verbs have multiple meanings.  Hang out  I hung my laundry out to dry. (separable)  My friends and I hang out after school. (inseparable)

5 Why Study and Use Phrasal Verbs?  Extremely common  Natural-sounding  You’ll learn both vocabulary and grammar  Meanings are easy to confuse, so study is necessary

6 Separable Phrasal Verbs  The teacher made Stephen give back the money.  She made him give the money back.  She made him give it back.  X She made him give back it.  Stephen’s father didn’t help bring up the children.  He didn’t help bring the children up.  He didn’t help bring them up.

7 The Rules For Separable Phrasal Verbs  She made him give the money back.  She made him give it back.  You can separate the phrasal verb with any object (a noun object or an object pronoun).  The teacher made Stephen give back the money.  You can put a noun object after the phrasal verb.  X She made him give back it.  You cannot put an object pronoun after the phrasal verb.

8 What’s Missing? bring backpick up call uptake back fill outtake down hang upthrow out hook upturn on I’ll say an object. You choose a phrasal verb and make a sentence using that object. Example: Teacher: Uncle Bill. Student: I’m going to call up Uncle Bill.

9 Finish The Sentence bring backpick up call uptake back fill outtake down hang upthrow out hook upturn on Student 1 begins a sentence using a phrasal verb. Student 2 completes the sentence with an object. Example: Student 1: I turned on… Student 2: the heat.

11 What Do They Have to Do This Saturday? Example: He has to fill out his income tax forms. He didn’t fill them out during the week.

A: That’s a good idea. I’ll call her up right now.  I’d like to hear some good music.  This coat is too warm.  I can never remember what to do for homework.  My essay is awful! It has too many mistakes.  My birthday party was a week ago. I still have some ice cream left.  What’s the capital of Ohio?

15 Inseparable Phrasal Verbs  Let’s go over the homework.  Let’s go over it.  X Let’s go the homework over.  X Let’s go it over.

16 Finish the Sentences  Hear from  Pick on  Take after  Run into  Call on  Get along with  Look through  Get over  Look up to Student 1: I heard from… Student 2: my grandmother. Student 1: The teacher always calls on… Student 2: Andy.

18 Get Along (With) This cat and dog get along with each other well. They are best friends and never fight.

19 Take After This girl takes after her mother. Her mother enjoys art, and she does, too. They also have the same color hair and similar personalities.

20 Look Up To The son looks up to his father. He thinks his father is the greatest person in the world. He wants to be like him when he grows up.

21 Tell A Story  Choose a character to write about.  You will get 5 phrasal verbs. Use all of them to write a story about the character.  Underline the phrasal verbs in your story.  Be creative! Get along Pick on Run into Take after Think over
