3 Define communication Communication is the process of creating understanding through the exchange of messages Process is ongoing We are constantly sending and receiving messages simultaneously

4 The Complete Model of Communication

5 Defining the Parts… Sender: person who has the message to communicate Receiver: person or persons to whom the message is addressed, whether the speaker is talking to one person or to a large audience Message: the idea the sender wants the receiver to understand

6 Defining the parts… Context Context – physical, social, psychological, and time elements in which the communication takes place *Physical (place of speech) *Social (relationship of people involved, roles assumed, acceptable behaviors) *Psychological (attitudes and behaviors involved) *Time (actual time communication occurs; point of history; stage of relationship

7 Defining the Parts… Channel – method of communicating; people communicate through 5 senses (seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling) Interference – anything that prevents effective communication; occurs at any point of the process

8 Interference Examples Receiver/sender: not preparing clear messages; receiver not paying attention Context: poor sound system; time of day affects audience attention spans; relationship between sender/receiver Channel: distortions –visual aids may be too small; technological glitches
