1 Analysis and Design of Controller for National Instruments myVTOL system Shane Henk. Electrical Engineering. Senior. Controller design Dr. Chunjiang Qian, Javier Gonzalez C 3 Lab Controllers are required to make a system function. A good controller will create a stable output from the system in a controlled environment. A certain level of understanding is required to properly design a good controller. Fuzzy controllers offer optimal performance for systems in uncontrolled environments. What type of system is this? What are the best values for our fuzzy controller? National Instruments has developed the myVTOL (Vertical Take Off and Landing) module for testing. No studies have been completed on this device, and in testing and analyzing the device, new information will become available to future students and teachers nation wide.

2 Methodologies To optimize the stability of the myVTOL system through the analysis and design of a controller The NI myDAQ (Data Acquisition) and myVTOL devices as well as Labview and Matlab were used to complete this study. Initially, data was collected in Labview through an included PID controller. Later, all programming was moved to Matlab for design of the fuzzy controller. A transfer function has been collected, and calculations for the design of a digital controller are being completed. A working fuzzy controller has been designed and tested with good results. Thus far, the efforts to find information regarding the dynamic properties of this system have resulted in the collection of realistic data, and a better understanding of the system.

3 Progress Report Programming to import and analyze data for calculating transfer function Complete integration into Matlab Fuzzy controller design Design a digital controller Fine tune fuzzy logic controller for multiple desired output A functioning digital controller capable of accomplishing any desired output An optimal working fuzzy controller capable of accomplishing any desired output Noise from sensor: Alleviated by moving average window Software anomalies Save all data regardless of run quality This research has given me a better understanding of what is included in the analysis and design of controls, and has solidified my desire to gain a career in the controls field. Summer research allows students to test drive their degree before graduation and help ensure they are remaining on the right track.
