2 2nd European Space Weather Week Nov 2005, ESTEC2/5 SEIS: Users Needs  Worsening space weather (SEU, degradation, poor data quality) ↳ concurrent real-time monitoring of sun-earth weather and satellites  Safe satellite and optimize science operation time ↳ setting susceptibility metric levels (proton, X-ray, neutron fluxes )  Correlation of space weather events ↳ collecting data across several flying missions  Distribute\Sharing experiences and lessons learnt ↳ expand the feedback (Flight Control Teams, SW-experts, design engineers, science teams)  Detect cause-effect relationships ↳ simple access and analysis of Space Weather and Satellites data ↳ available space weather models and prediction engines  SEIS is a Decision Support System (Prototype) for Satellite Operations –increase the awareness of Space Weather Events –improve understanding of Space Weather Events and Effects –increase the quality of the satellite services –enhance the safety of the satellite –deliver a set of multi mission space weather services –suggest recovery actions  Near real-time monitoring SEIS Monitoring Tool (MT) Client  Offline data exploration and correlation analysis SEIS Reporting and Analysis Tool (RAT) Client  Generation of forecast data SEIS Forecasting Module  Configurable alarm services SEIS Alarm’s Engine SEIS: Objectives SEIS: Services

3 2nd European Space Weather Week Nov 2005, ESTEC3/5 SEIS: User Feedback The system is an operational prototype, complementary and extending the services offered by existing system (NOAA-SEC)  Status: ↳ Installation in ESOC on June 2005 (MT), Sept 2005 (RAT) ↳ Undergoing final acceptance and operational validation  Preliminary Results: ↳ susceptibility metrics on solar flare 09/05 ↳ flare\SEU automatic report  Problems: ↳ The system reported up to now some limitations, hardware and software platform related (1 man month/ year) (2 man month/year)

4 2nd European Space Weather Week Nov 2005, ESTEC4/5 SEIS: Sustainability of Service  Effort to run the service: ↳ 5 man month/year in the installation and testing phase ↳ 2 man month/year in the maintenance phase  Cost to run the service: ↳ 20-30 K /mission year  Income by external customer ↳ N.A. at moment on the operational prototype  Funds by external sources ↳ N.A. at moment on the operational prototype SEIS is a Stand alone service, in prototype phase  improvements would derive on sustainability ↳ as part of a global operational service (frame contract) in the operational phase ↳ by prototype consolidation after testing and validation phase ↳ by Standardization of the data services ↳ by Standardization of the upstream data (SWENET, web service) SEIS:Improvement  improvements & evolution on services ↳ Forecasting tools proposed by the University of Malaga  solar flares forecaster  radiation belts dynamics forecaster ↳ Email or SMS Alarming for Space Weather Events ↳ ESA\ESOC Space Environment Website for Mission Control Purpose ↳ New\upgraded Space Environment models ↳ Integration of black-box models, e.g. Neural Networks ↳ Data Mining applications SEIS: Evolution
