2 What is Netiquette? Netiquette is known as the “social code of the internet.” Netiquette comes from the words “network” and “etiquette.” Netiquette provides the appropriate boundaries, or the “do’s and don’ts” of social networking.

3 Social Media Do’s Project a positive image – show your best self! Share information accurately Share helpful tools or sites for professional development or research that users may find helpful or interesting. Respect the privacy of yourself and others Think twice before you share!

4 Social Media Don’ts Share information or pictures that you would not want your boss, teacher or grandmother to know about. Start arguments via social media. Clutter pages with chain-mail/links/shared stories. Portray yourself, anyone else, or anything inaccurately. Share every detail of your life

5 Copyright and Fair Use What does copyright mean?  A work of poetry, movie, CD, video game, video, play, painting, sheet music, recorded performances, novels, software code, sculpture, photograph, piece of choreography or architectural design may be eligible for copyright if they are “fixed in a tangible medium of expression,” is an original work and is the result of some creative effort. Copyright protects the work from being copied or reproduced for over 70 years.

6 Copyright and Fair Use What does Fair Use mean?  Fair use allows pupils to use copyrighted materials for specific, limited purposes. Purposes that are covered under Fair Use protect against the copyright law. If a material is not covered under Fair Use and is copied, it is considered illegalinfringement.

7 Copyright and Fair Use What factors are considered to constitute Fair Use?  The purpose of the use of materials  The nature of the work  How much of the work will be used or copied  The potential effect on the market of the original work

8 Plagiarism Plagiarism occurs when someone does not provide adequate documentation of all sources of which are included in research. This could be in essay, presentation or various other forms. Plagiarism may occur when full text is used without quotations, or when text is paraphrased and not cited. Always cite sources of information!

9 Plagiarism How can I avoid plagiarism?  Use research to gain insight, but develop your own work.  While referencing research, write about your opinion of the text.  Make your own contributions to work.  Always give credit to researchers and resources

10 Plagiarism How can plagiarism be prevented in the classroom?  Educate students on plagiarism  Give students references for help with citing sources  Utilize the tools at Plagiarism.org to check when to cite a source

11 Plagiarism What tools are available for teachers to check assignments for plagiarism?  GOOGLE!! You can always enter text into Google. Many times plagiarized materials will come up in the first search items.  Turn It In – a program that students can turn in assignments to – will check for plagiarism for the teacher. There are also tools such as PlagiarismChecker.com that provide the same service.

12 Safety on the Internet Identity Theft  It is important to protect yourself from Identity Theft. While many purchases can be made online, we must be careful!  Use only trusted sites for purchases.  Use a secure network at all times  Never put private information on public computers! If for some reason you must access private information, always be sure to log out completely!  Use security questions that use answer that others would be unable to find through public access.

13 Safety on the Internet Reputation Management  It is important to always maintain a professional, positive image on the Internet  Never post inappropriate text or photographs  Do not post information about illegal or unethical activities  Use proper grammar  Remember that information from work that is confidential is not to be shared via social media – even if you are not using names!  Always remember the old saying, “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!”

14 Safety on the Internet Passwords are the key to information you store online – if in the wrong hands, there could be risk of identity theft!  Always reset passwords that are automatically given  When possible, do not access sites using passwords in public networks  Never tell anyone your password  Never respond to emails asking about your password

15 Safety on the Internet Cyber bullying can occur through email, social media, texting, blogs or gaming systems. Cyber bullying occurs when one purposely harasses another by intimidation or threats. There are many methods of cyber bullying – group bashing, “dissing,” harassment, attacking texts, or through an individual sharing confidential information about another on social media. These are just a few of the ways that one may experience cyber bullying.

16 Safety on the Internet Signs of Cyber Bullying  Avoidance of technology  Change in eating/sleeping habits  Change in mood  Withdrawal socially and scholastically

17 Safety on the Internet How can teachers deal with cyber bullying?  Review the school’s Code of Conduct and procedures for cyber bullying.  Be involved – keep an eye on internet activity and computer usage, as well as student behavior changes  Emphasize proper behavior, character education and the seriousness of cyber bullying

18 Internet Safety Cyber Stalking – How can it be prevented?  Pay attention to articles and peers who have recently been hacked. Remember the sources/methods used for hacking in those situations and be on the look out.  Do not enter financial information on sites that cannot prove that they are secure.  Never respond to stalkers/attackers. Always keep record and report abuse to website administrators.

19 Computer Safety Viruses  Viruses are computer programs that can interfere with a computer’s operations.  They may be spread through downloads.  Viruses must be removed  It is important to have anti-virus software installed on your computer

20 Computer Safety Phishing  Phishing may occur on websites, through emails or phone calls  The purpose of phishing is to steal money  Signs of a phishing email are suspicious links, bad spelling and grammar and threats  Phishing links may look like links for popular websites at first glance – always check to make sure the link is spelled correctly

21 Computer Safety Worms  What is a worm? It can sometimes be put in the same category as a virus. However, they are different.  Worms have all of the code need to interrupt computer operation alone.  Worms may delete code or files important to the computer.  Worms may spread through searching address books on email systems.
