3 Outlining for an Essay Why should you spend a short time (3 minutes) outlining your essay when you take a US History Regents exam?

4 Outlining thematic essays Your outline should be clear, organized, and sensible.

5 Outline Tips: Read over the task two or three times Understand how many things you have to do Pay attention to bolded words Pay attention to plural words (circumstances, groups, cases, examples etc.) – more than one Jot down some key words, ideas you can use

6 Write the thesis, brainstorm outside info Transform the task into a thesis statement Why is it important to include outside info in your essay? Practice

7 Review the Essays 1. Review essays 1,2,3 on the handout. 2. Write a short outline for each one in the space provided. 3. Brainstorm and list outside info for each essay. 4. Write a thesis sentence at the bottom of each essay.

8 Final Exam Directions: On a separate piece of paper, write a well-organized essay that includes an introduction, several paragraphs addressing the task below, and a conclusion. See the rubric below for scoring. Theme: Rights of the Accused In the United States Constitution, there are certain rights that protect people accused of crimes and infractions. Over the course of US history, the nature of these rights have been changed by the Supreme Court. Task: Identify two Supreme Court cases that have dealt with the rights of the accused. For each case: Explain the background of the case and the constitutional issue the court had to resolve. Evaluate the extent to which the Supreme Court Decision extended or limited citizens’ rights. Discuss the effect the Supreme Court decision has for Americans today.
