+ Introduction to Shapes Squares and Rectangles
2
+ Do Now: Chalk Talk
3
+ Polygon A polygon is regular when all angles are equal and all sides are equal Example: square, equilateral triangle, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon
4
+ Quadrilateral A flat shape with four straight sides Examples: Squares, Rectangles, Rhombus, Trapezoid, Parallelogram
5
+ Square A 4-sided flat shape with straight sides where: all sides have equal length, and every interior angle is a right angle (90°) It is a Quadrilateral and a Regular Polygon
6
+ Perimeter The distance around a two-dimensional shape. Perimeter Example: the perimeter of this rectangle is 3+7+3+7 = 20
7
+ Perimeter of a Square P=S+S+S+S or P=4s Perimeter is measured in units
8
+ Find the Perimeter
9
+ Rectangle A 4-sided flat shape with straight sides where all interior angles are right angles (90°). Also opposite sides are parallel and of equal length.
10
+ Perimeter of a Rectangle P=S+S+S+S or P= 2(Length)+2(Width) Perimeter is measured in units
11
+ Find the Perimeter
12
+ Practice Work on the following hand out!
13
+ Area The size of a surface. The amount of space inside the boundary of a flat (2- dimensional) object
14
+ Area of a Square and Rectangles A= Length x Width Units squared
15
+ What is the Area?
16
+ Practice! Work on the following hand-out!
17
+ Before You Go! Define Area Define Perimeter Draw a Square or Rectangle and find the perimeter and area of your shape
