3 Composition of the Atmosphere Nitrogen makes up about 78% of the Earth’s atmosphere. Nitrogen Cycle: N moves from air to soil then to plants and animals and back to the air Oxygen makes up 21% Plants produce O during photosynthesis

4 Ozone Ozone is a molecule of 3 Oxygen atoms Ozone forms the Ozone layer in the upper atmosphere Ozone absorbs harmful UV rays Some human activities break down ozone and the layer (CFCs, exhaust)

5 Atmospheric Pressure Gravity holds the gases of the atmosphere near the surface. The air molecules are compressed and exert force of the Earth’s surface= ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE Atmospheric Pressure changes at different altitudes and temperatures

7 Measuring Atmospheric Pressure Meteorologists use ATMOSPHERES (atms) to measure air pressure. The average atmospheric pressure at sea level is 1 atm A barometer is the instrument to measure atms

8 Layers of the Atmosphere Troposphere: layer that is closest to the earth’s surface and where most weather occurs. Stratosphere: top of the troposphere to about 50km. Most of the Ozone is in the troposphere Mesosphere: above the stratosphere to 80km, nearly - 90 degrees Celsius. Coldest layer. Thermosphere: Above mesosphere, temperature increases because of solar radiation. Ionosphere: lower part of thermosphere, where AURORAS occur---Interactions between solar radiation and the gases of the ionosphere.

9 Temperature Inversions The layering of warm air on top of cool air is a TEMPERATURE INVERSION. This can trap the cool air. If the cool air is polluted= SMOG
