3 Effects of war:  Total deaths is almost equal to all other American wars combined  10% of pop. served in military for 4 years… disruption to their lives  Secession was always a threat before war – no more!  But states’ rights argument still there…  Growth of Federal Power

4 North and South affected differently…  N. economy thrived!  S. economy devastated  No more slavery – staple of old economy  40% of livestock wiped out  Railroads, farms, and cities destroyed (most fighting takes place on S. land…)
