The plan for today What is careful logging Why careful logging is important What role do you play Look at some practical examples Organize for field session

Careful logging – what is it? Thinking about more than just getting wood out of the bush Common sense adjustments to traditional operations to minimize impacts Focus for today;  Fish and shoreline habitat  Damage to uncut trees  Soil and soil water

Careful logging – why bother? Lots of reasons, here’s a few Legislative / legal Corporate expectations Public expectations Ecological impacts Productivity impacts

Federal and Provincial laws: Crown Forest Sustainability Act …… The Fisheries Act Public Lands Act Technical Standards and Safety Act Legislative / Legal

Forest Management Plans: Reflect applicable rules and regulations Balance multiple objectives (e.g. timber vs wildlife) Include specific “rules” for the bush (i.e. compliance) Developed in accordance with Forest Management Guides….. Legislative / Legal

Forest Management Guides: Assist development of FMP Reflect legislative context Specific standards and guidelines normally adopted by FMPs (e.g. buffers on water, skid trail coverage, etc) Specific measures adopted for field compliance Legislative / Legal

Compliance: Measured against FMP, regulations, and related manuals (e.g. scaling manual) Includes harvest, access, renewal, maintenance and protection Industry is self-compliant and MNR does audits and spot checks

Legislative / Legal Compliance (continued) Possible result:  In compliance  In compliance with comments   Not in compliance  Possible consequence:  Pat on the back  Work stoppage, preventative measures, repair order, penalty, etc

Company Policies Mandatory when operating on behalf of a company, enforceable by that company’s compliance staff Sometimes referred to as Standard Operating Procedure or SOP  Can you think of an examples from your company / SFL? Corporate expectations

Public expectations Crown land = public forest People are watching and worried about how we are treating the forest Can’t meet all expectations (e.g. even the best job still looks ugly to some people) Public is diverse and also expects jobs in the mill, continuous flow of wood, etc

Direct impacts Compaction and rutting of soil Erosion of soil Loss of productive land Smothering of roots, plants, habitats Excessive tree damage (crown, stem, root) Sediment in water Change in ground water flow Inefficient operations

Possible Consequences Reduced productivity (trees, plants, etc) Reduced wood quality and supply Expensive logging next time (e.g. reconstruct trails) Expensive renewal (i.e. plant more often) Loss of habitat and overall site degradation Penalties ($)
