6 Northern Humanists and the church
Northern Humanists were scholars who had travelled to Italy to study humanist ways and greek and latin languages. Gained: Appreciation for ancient texts as well as new methods for analyzing text (Greek/Roman logic) Beliefs: Public Service, Dedication to Church Analysis of old texts led to questioning of translations and validity of sources.

7 Erasmus, The Bible and controversy
Dutch Renaissance humanist, Catholic priest, social critic, teacher, and theologian. After lengthy study, he took issue with the Latin Vulgate Bible, which he felt contained translation errors from the Greek version. Updated in 1516 and again in 1522. Faced Church Criticism for his work; (unintentionally) inspired future disobedience towards the church.
