Trade – Trade networks emerge across Europe as cities grow – Major network: Hanseatic League (1200-1400s) Movement of artists & scholars – Fled to escape wars between Northern European and Italian city states – Some Northern artists went to Italy to study Development of printing – Quick, inexpensive making of books

6 Northern Renaissance Philosophers Desiderius Erasmus (Dutch, 1466-1536) – Combined humanism and Christianity into Christian Humanism – In Praise of Folly – Criticized focus on ritual over values – Wanted simple Christian life, stripped of ritual and politics – Strong proponent of educating children Sir Thomas More (English, 1478-1535) – Influential humanist – Major work – Utopia – Criticized English government and society, gave a vision of a perfect, but non-existent society based on reason – Utopia is now a common word for any ideal society
