4 The aim: To find and describe types of employment for women with small children and to define their determinants. Objectives: ◦ To find types of employment for women with children aged 0-1,5 years; 1,5-3 years; 4-6 years; 7-13 years and for women without children. ◦ To make typology of women’ strategies on labor market according to the types of employment ◦ To reveal factors that influence on type of strategy on the labor market that a women chose after child birth The aim and objectives

5 ◦ Object – women with children under 14 in 2000-2009 years. ◦ The simple excludes pensioners, invalids, because their demographic and labor behavior could significantly vary from other women. ◦ Extra focus on women with children under 7. ◦ Subject – types of employment among women with small children. 6 Databases 1) Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS) Years: 1994-2010 Sample ~ 12 000 households each year Panel data Representative for Russia The survey is held in Russia by HSE 2) Parents and children, men and women in family and society (RiDMiZh or Rus GGS) Years: 2004, 2007 Sample ~ 11 000 households each wave Representative for Russia Respondents from 18 until 84 years The survey is held in Russia by the Independent Institute for Social Policy (IISP)

7 Methodology Descriptive analysis on sub-samples of woman with children of different age. Objective 1 Cluster analysis on characteristics of work for women with small children Sub-sample includes women who have: Year (T) – childbirth Years (T-1), (T+1), (T+3), (Y+6) – work characteristics Objective II Multinominal regression model Dependent variable – women’ strategies of behavior at the labor market Independent variables – status of women on the labor market before childbearing; type of employment before childbearing; presence of other people in the HH; age and education of woman; family income etc. Objective III

14 Next steps Using RLMS database for panel analysis that allows to observe women’ employment before and after the childbirth Building the typology of strategies of women with small children in the labor market Defining the determinants of every labor market behavior strategy Developing of recommendations for Russian social and labor market policy by a part of women with small children
