MCC Priorities Impact 2011 … an MCC public affairs and advocacy strategy … Prepared by Daniel H. Tessier President Presented by Jennifer Ross MCC Board of Directors September 2011

Objective Create an organization that is recognized and respected by motorcyclists across Canada for its leadership in and contribution to:  Rider Safety  Rider Rights  Outreach  Competition  Rider Affinity Program  Community Building

MCC Brand Promise The Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada is the national not- for-profit advocacy organization for the promotion of motorcycling interests. We work with member organizations to unite Canadian motorcyclists by promoting, protecting and preserving their rights so they are free to enjoy motorcycling as a sport, leisure activity, and means of personal transportation. We provide a forum for members from across the country to share in our expertise and communicate their needs to key decision makers and the public. Through our alliances with member organizations and key international partners we deliver a strong voice and respected place for Canada in the motorcycling world.

Approach Create and implement a comprehensive public affairs and advocacy strategy designed to convey a compelling message leading to actions and results that benefit the motorcycling community.

MCC Statement of Policy  Weigh-in on public policy issues that impact the Canadian motorcycling community.  Develop an MCC Statement of Policy to crystallize efforts and guide the development of a national strategy.

MCC Statement of Policy … putting focus on issues  Summary of where MCC stands on a wide- range rider-related policy and safety issues: Mobility and Infrastructure Standards Consumer and Public Policy Issues Operating Regulations and Licensing Rider Safety and Education  Details policies (goals, objectives and principles) and recommendations (actions)

MCC Statement of Policy … designed to:  Guide MCC and Member (Federations; Clubs;) public policy and advocacy work;  Provide a single, clear and consistent point of reference for decision-makers, the media and communities of interest;  Motivate MCC leadership;  Enhance MCC positioning strategy.

Message The need for federal-provincial-territorial- municipal governments to  acknowledge the positive aspects of motorcycling;  recognize motorcycling as a modal transportation choice for hundreds of thousands of Canadians; and  better integrate motorcycling into our nation’s transport strategy.

The Public Policy Challenge  Focus on risk has prevented the advantages of motorcycling as a form of transport, recreational activity and sport from being recognized.  Consequently, decision-makers, in particular road safety professionals, view motorcycling as a high-risk activity that must be contained, discouraged or eliminated.  Motorcyclists view the identification and management of risk as a priority.  Decision-makers tend to put emphasis on the wrong priorities.

Outreach 2011 - 2012  MCC Press Conference  Stakeholder Outreach – Meetings/Webcast  MCC Day on the Hill – Federal  Provincial Meetings and Awareness  Conferences and Workshops
