Today´s Challenge is set by:

What do these have in common? Tower Bridge London Self-serve supermarket checkouts Glastonbury festival main stage Bottle of Chanel No. 5

They wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for engineers

In teams answer the following: What is Engineering? What skills does an engineer possess? What % of TfL staff are engineers?

Four main areas of engineering Mechanical: Cars and all things that move Chemical: Converting raw materials into a range of products Civil: Everything built - roads, buildings, bridges, underground, flood defenses, dams Electrical: Designing power systems e.g. transformers, lighting

But there are over 30 types of engineering courses with 100s of sub-categories…

What do engineers say it’s all about? Turning problems into opportunities Building for the future and building to last Crazy big ideas! Sharing ideas with the world to make all our lives easier

Why is engineering cool? As a grown up you get to play with stuff and call it research You get to think with your mind and create with your hands Engineers have a social impact. They help to provide food, shelter, power, water, transport… basically everything!

Want your CV to stand out? “Projects like the schools challenge really show initiative and make an application and interview stand out” - Grace Rogers: Recruitment Manager (Apprentice & Graduate Schemes), TfL

Research Time Answers: 1.To keep London working and growing and make life in London better. 2.13 BusesUnderground Cycling Overground River services Docklands Light Railway Taxi & private hireTram Streets/WalkingEmirates Air Line Victoria Coach Station TfL Rail Dial-a-Ride 1.What is TfL’s goal? 2. How many different modes of transport do they support?

The Challenge #KeepingLondonMoving Working in teams you must complete the challenge brief and present your best ideas Suggest an improvement to a part of London’s transport system

The Prize We are looking for an outstanding & engaged team who will win: A place on a TfL finale day Work experience with TfL CV and interview workshop Meeting the challenge requirements: Demonstrate a creative, innovative and imaginative response to the brief Ideally demonstrate an understanding of basic engineering concepts Display use of research and resources Work collectively in a group of students with diverse skills Clearly present information within the video submission

How TfL re-invests all of its income

TfL Created in 2000, their black cabs, buses and tubes now have global recognition Cycle Super- highways began construction in April 2015 TfL is a local government organisation Tottenham Court Road to open by end of 2016 New entrance at Bond Street by 2017 On average 30 million journeys made a day across TfL network

We want to know… Which mode of transport you have chosen? What do you want to change? How & why? Who will be affected? Create a SWOT based on your ideas

CASE STUDIES

Case Study Problem: Delays caused by credit-less Oysters Solution: Contactless Payment There’s no longer any need to spend time topping up Oyster balances because fares are charged directly to payment card accounts Leading technology now gives customers more ease and convenience, secure payments can be made for purchases of £20 and under

Case Study Problem: Cyclist accidents on the roads Solution: Super Cycle Highway To help prevent accidents and collisions on the road, TfL are creating a wide cycle track for cyclists from East to West London Changes will also incorporate more pedestrian space with widened footpaths, traffic islands and bus and coach stops

We use transport every day Consider how engineering has played a part in each of these

Can you make your service… faster? More accessible? More fun?More affordable? More eco- friendly? More regular? Choose a solution Create a design for your chosen solution

Who will benefit from your idea? What sort of skills will you require from the team carrying out the changes? How does your idea meet TfL’s goals? How would you communicate these ideas to the public? Consider…

Once your idea is fully thought through… You will have up to 5 minutes to grab TfL’s attention and prove you are worthy of a place at the finale. You must present your ideas to camera, as a united team.

Presentation Top Tips Make sure your voice can be heard. Don’t rush! Have something to say. Speak clearly and with purpose. Control your body language. Don’t fidget. Practice, practice, practice!

TfL will watch ALL submissions and select the pitches that best meet the criteria. GOOD LUCK!

THANK YOU
