1 Introduction To Computer and Information Technology

2  Storage Device – hardware components that retain data even after power is lost  Storage Media – Object that physically holds data such as a CD or DVD.  BIOS –(Basic Input/Output System) is a set of programs that tells the computer system how to start up.  Memory & Storage ◦ Memory(RAM)- temporary location to store files ◦ Storage – permanent storage in various locations in and around the PC.

3  Write the following words on a sheet of paper 1) Online Storage(Cloud) 2) Flash Storage(Drive) 3)External Hard Drive. Below or beside each term indicate when this type of storage should be used and draw a picture that can be associated with the particular type of storage(Example Draw a cloud out beside Online Storage.

4  Break into groups of 2  Next disassemble the provided hard drive and then identify the key parts found in graphic below.  After reassembling your hard drive in your group write a one paragraph explanation over how a hard drive works using at least 5 of the key parts that were identified.

5  Primary Storage – main memory of the computer and commonly called RAM  Secondary Storage – Devices that can store data permanently such as hard drives, flash drives, CD’s, external hard drive or the cloud.

6  Read Only Device – CD-Rs are examples of read only devices since you cannot change the data on the medium or save more data to it  Read/Write Device – CD-RW is an example of a read/write device where you can read and also write or change data on the medium.  How does it all work……  Optical storage(CD’s and DVD’s) is an electronic storage medium that uses low-power laser beams to record and retrieve digital (binary) data. In optical-storage technology, a laser beam encodes digital data onto an optical, or laser, disk in the form of tiny pits arranged in concentric tracks on the disk’s surface. 7  Construct a one paragraph newspaper article that informs the reader about CD’s and DVD’s and how information is both stored and retrieved from these two types of optical storage mediums.

8  Slow Retrieval – searching from the beginning to the end or required to look in multiple places.  Data Decay - Wearing down of the storage medium causing data to be lost. Air, heat and humidity can impact drives, CD’s and DVD’s  Friction – The more a magnetic medium such as a CD is used or hard drive is used the greater chance that the medium and friction cause issues.

9  Cloud – Internet and servers to store data  Virtualization – multiple storage devices in various locations are brought together to make the user feel that all the data is in one place.  SAN – a network of storage devices  New Magnetic Media – hard drives will store as much as 1 Tb per square inch.  Holographic Media – stores data in images called holograms on optical cubes and will be 10 times faster than today’s hard drives.

10  It is hard to almost believe the statement above and some will not believe it until they see it.  Create a graphical depiction that will showcase Holographic Media and how it will be used. A viewer should be able to see how the data will be stored and get an indication of how much faster it will be when compared to today’s hard drives.

11  Operating System defined – a set of instructions designed to work with a specific type of computer.  Operating systems are generally stored on the hard drive and is loaded into memory(RAM) before the computer can be used.

12  Real Time Systems – used to control large equipment such as factory machines or construction equipment.  Single User/Single Task Systems – a person can do one task at a time, what is usually on a handheld computer such as a price scanner.  Single User / Multitasking Systems – allows the computer to perform several jobs at once. Windows  Multi-User Systems – allows multiple individuals to use one large computers, the OS balances the work.

13  Desktop – a visual display that lets you interact with the workspace and visual items such as icons  Icons – On the screen pictures that represent programs or resources on a PC  Options – the OS allows you to change the background or the placement of icons or color schemes.

14  Design a collage of operating systems. The collage should have at least ten (10) different operating system names or logos. The operating systems can be for computer systems or for iOS(phone & tablet) devices.  The collage can be designed within a computer program or on a standard piece of paper.

15  -Create a new iOS or mobile operating system for Smartphone’s or portable devices. Students should research a current iOS or mobile operating system first to see the main features and characteristics and then each students needs to create a one page magazine article that will include a name for his/her iOS or mobile operating system. Each iOS should have some sort of logo or design that represents the iOS or mobile operating system (Example the Android), the main features of the IOS should be listed, the benefits a user would experience by using this iOS or mobile operating system when compared to other iOS’s or mobile operating systems should be included A release date for the iOS or mobile operating system along with the phones or platforms that the iOS or mobile operating system is intended for should be included.  Students will have two days to design the magazine article.
