17 Honesty In today's competitive job market, it's easy to be tempted to make your resume look more desirable than it actually is. Small lies could take your career to the next level. But does that make it okay? And for both employers and jobseekers, what are the consequences? 78% of resumes are misleading 27% of U.S. workers have been fired due to resume lies W hat is unethical, however, is outright lying on a resume or job application, which is something 53% of job applicants admit to doing.

18 And once those resumes get past the gatekeeper, the lying doesn’t stop, as Yolk Recruitment found that 60% of jobseekers admit to lying during an interview. All in all, 84.1% of employers say they have come across candidates who have misrepresented facts on their resumes and/or job applications. This trend is showing no signs of slowing down, as a full 70% of college students say they would lie on a resume to get a job they want. 19 Rand Ghayad of Northeastern UniversityRand Ghayad of Northeastern University conducted a study in which he sent out 12,000 mock resumes and found that a resounding majority of employers would rather hire candidates with little experience over qualified candidates who have been out of work for more than six months. GradSchoolHub found that a similar situation occurs for new mothers, who, after taking time off to tend to their children, find difficulties in their job search and resort to lying about past employment dates.

GradSchoolHub reports that 27% of U.S. workers admit to lying on their resumes and getting fired once the lies were found out.
