2  Who can Participate?  The geographical distribution of governmental power within the state  The relationship between the legislative and legislative branches of government

3  Supreme rule lies with the people  Can be direct or indirect  Direct democracy-public policy is ________  Indirect democracy-public policy is________  Examples: United States, Sweden, India

4  Those who rule cannot be responsible for the will of the people.  Two types:  Autocracy- is a government where___________  Oligarchy –is a government where _______________  All dictatorships are authoritarian meaning the ruler or the ruling party has absolute power.  Examples: Cuba and North Korea

5  Centralized Government- all the powers of the government belong to a single central agency.  Local govt’s only have the power the central govt decides to give them  Examples: Great Britain, Scotland, and Northern Ireland

6  Gov’t that divides power among central and local govt’s  Both levels work on their own on the people with their own sets laws  Examples: United States, Australia, Mexico, and Canada

7  An alliance of independent states.  Only real power is the control of a common defense and trade.  Examples: European States, Articles of confederation, and Confederate states of America

8  The executive and legislative branches are independent but equal.  Chief Legislature is ______  The Constitution in the United States states the powers of both Branches  Examples: USA, Cyprus, and Columbia

9  Executive Branch is prime minister and the official’s cabinet  The prime minister and the cabinet are also members of the legislative branch  Prime Minister- Majority Party leader  Selects the members of congress with parliament approval  Examples: England, Spain, Italy
