4
BIODIVERSITY The variety and variability among living organisms and the ecological complexes in which they occur
5
Primary and Secondary Biodiversity Codes Primary code Activities have a primary objective of conserving biological diversity in natural and managed terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Activities are identified through an analysis of the threats to biodiversity and have associated indicators for biodiversity conservation, preferably at the strategic objective level. Activities may be site-based or not site specific, such as policy level initiatives. Site-based work is implemented in biologically significant areas. Ex situ conservation of wild species, and their germplasm, may also be included when explicitly for the purpose of biodiversity conservation. Secondary code Activities have biodiversity conservation as an explicit, but not primary, objective in natural and managed terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Activities are identified through an analysis of the threats to biodiversity and have associated indicators for biodiversity conservation. Activities may be site-based or not site specific, such as policy level initiatives. Site-based work is implemented in biologically significant areas. Ex situ conservation of wild species, and their germplasm, may also be included when explicitly linked to biodiversity conservation.

Required elements to meet the code 1.The program must have an explicit, but not necessarily primary, biodiversity objective 2.Activities must be identified based on an analysis of threats to biodiversity 3.The program must monitor associated indicators for biodiversity conservation 4.Site-based programs must have the intent to positively impact biodiversity in biologically significant areas
8
Required elements to meet the code 1.The program must have an explicit, but not necessarily primary, biodiversity objective Reduce the rate of deforestation Increase connectivity between protected areas Improve management in a protected area Improve or expand habitat of key species red bulleted points are illustrative
9
Required elements to meet the code 2. Activities must be identified based on an analysis of threats to biodiversity Increasing demand for and sale of wild animal products Decreased availability of medicinal plants Country biodiversity threats analysis Incursion into protected areas by settlers or agriculture Destruction of reefs by dynamite or pollution red bulleted points are illustrative
10
Required elements to meet the code 3. The program must monitor associated indicators for biodiversity conservation Wildlife counts Number of management plans enacted Number of resource user groups operating Reef health Habitat connectivity (forest cover) Reduced use of illegal timber for fuel Reduced sedimentation of mangrove habitats red bulleted points are illustrative
12
Required elements to meet the code 4.Site-based programs must have the intent to positively impact biodiversity in biologically significant areas. Significant at country, regional or global scale
