Stalin DBQ

DBQ What does that mean?

DBQ Document Based Questions Documents of all sorts can be used to collect “real” information when you need to answer a historical question or write a report. What is “real” information?

DBQ Primary sources: Diaries from the event Government records Interviews Poems by serfs A sculpture or piece of artwork by a peasant on a collective farm Photographs Treaties Maps

DBQ Secondary sources: An article about a piece of art Book on The Holocaust An essay about collective farms A biography of a Stalin Newspaper article

 If we were writing a DBQ, the first thing we would do is read all of our primary and secondary source documents.  Let’s read all our documents.

 Document A  Apples and bananas are two types of fruits. They are great to eat for a snack! Both fruits are healthy because they both contain Vitamin C! Neither fruit is very expensive. You can get a banana at the store for $0.69 and an apple for $0.99!  Document B  Some fruits are big and some fruits are small. Apples and bananas are the perfect size because they are easy to carry in your lunchbox. An apple is about the size of a baseball and a banana can fit in your hand!

 STEP 1:  Look at your DBQ question.  What are the similarities between apples and bananas?  Step 2:  Create 3 categories to answer the question.  Category/Similarity 1: They are both healthy  Category/Similarity 2: They are easy to carry  Category/Similarity 3: They are both affordable

 STEP 3:  Provide as much evidence from the documents for each of the categories  Similarity 1: They are both healthy  Banana Evidence: Contain Vitamin C (Doc A)  Apple Evidence: Contain Vitamin C (Doc A)  Similarity 2: They are easy to carry  Banana Evidence: Fit in your hand (Doc B)  Apple Evidence: Size of a baseball (Doc B)  Similarity 3: They are both affordable  Banana Evidence: $0.69 (Doc A)  Apple Evidence: $0.99 (Doc A)

Paragraph STEP 4 STEP 4:- Put all your categories, evidence and documents used into a paragraph. Apples and Bananas are similar in many ways. One similarity is that they are both healthy fruits. Document A states that bananas contain Vitamin C. Apples also contain Vitamin C. (Doc A). Another similarity is that they are both very easy to carry. A banana can easily fit in your hand (Doc B) and an apple is only the size of a baseball. (Doc B). A third similarity between apples and bananas is that they are both affordable. Doc A states that you can buy a banana for 69 cents and an apple for 99 cents. Apples and bananas are two fruits with a lot in common. SEE HOW IT MATCHES YOUR OUTLINE  Similarity 1: They are both healthy  Banana Evidence: Contain Vitamin C (Doc A)  Apple Evidence: Contain Vitamin C (Doc A)  Similarity 2: They are easy to carry  Banana Evidence: Fit in your hand (Doc B)  Apple Evidence: Size of a baseball (Doc B)  Similarity 3: They are both affordable  Banana Evidence: $0.69 (Doc A)  Apple Evidence: $0.99 (Doc A)
