11 History of Political Parties When George Washington gave his Farewell Address he warned America of what 3 things??? Avoid foreign alliances, avoid debt, and avoid political parties.

12 True or False 1. I believe that Shays Rebellion and the Whiskey Rebellion posed a threat to our country. This type of mob rule provides no benefit for the people and does not keep our government in check. 2. I believe that United States should not help the people of France overthrow their government. That is their business. 3. I believe that the federal government should be strong to keep our nation unified. Too much state power causes way too many problems and the Federal gov’t can make all states happy. 4. I believe that the Constitution should be flexible and should not be followed word for word. The president and congress should be able to do things not stated in the Constitution. 5. I believe that the national government should keep have a common currency and a strong national bank. I don’t think a national bank could become corrupt while handling all of the nation’s money. 6. I believe that we should trade with England instead of France. I anticipate being wealthy as an adult. I will probably choose a profession such as business owner, lawyer, or doctor. 9. I believe that the United States should always have a large military. I don’t feel as if military power could be abused by people in power (i.e. to stop another American Revolution). 10. I believe only educated, property owners ae capable of self-government. You should not be able to vote unless you own property and are educated.

20 Leader of the Federalists The Federalists party was founded in 1794. It was founded by Alexander Hamilton. Alexander Hamilton was a member of Washington’s cabinet.

21 Type of Government The Federalist believed in a strong national /central government. They did not want the states to have too much power for fear that it would divide the country.

22 What Were the Federalists Afraid Of? The federalists party were afraid of mob rule. They thought that government decisions should be made by educated, wealthy citizens. They believed the common man wouldn’t always act in their best interest.

24 How to Interpret the Constitution The Federalists also supported a loose interpretation of the constitution. The constitution was made to be flexible. People shouldn’t follow it word for word.

25 Leader of the Federalists The Federalists party believed that yes the country should have a national bank. The national bank would be the most powerful bank in the country. It would be where the government kept its money.

32 Leader The Democratic-Republicans was founded in 1793 by Thomas Jefferson. In fact, many historians refer to the beliefs and actions of this party as “Jeffersonian democracy.”

37 Interpretation of Constitution Jefferson’s Democratic- Republicans said no to the national bank. They feared the bank would become corrupt and favor the rich. They also feared it would lead to too much power in one place.

38 Economic Beliefs of the Democratic- Republicans The Democratic-Republicans supported the “common man” like farmers and craftsmen. They saw the future of America’s economy centered around farming and trade with France.

40 Strongest Supporters The Democratic-Republicans were mostly supported by farmers, tradespeople and the working class. In fact Thomas Jefferson saw the future of America as being a “rural nation” made up of farmers.
