1 IPC-2221 Connectors and Interconnects One of the major advantages of using printed board assemblies, as opposed to other types of component mounting and interconnection methods, is their ability to provide ease of maintainability. Devices (connectors) have been developed to provide the desired mechanical/electrical interface between the printed board assemblies, or between a printed board assembly and discrete interconnection wiring.

2 IPC-2221 Connectors and Interconnects Board size and weight are important factors in choosing connector mounting hardware, and in deciding whether the board will be mounted horizontally or vertically. It is common practice to mount a connector either to a mother board or to board racks or frames, and then insert the component board into the connector using appropriate guiding and support mechanisms.

3 IPC-2221 Connectors and Interconnects In general, if the assembly is to encounter a great deal of vibration, the board should be attached to a connector or supported by mechanical means other than relying on contact friction to provide the mechanical interface.

4 IPC-2221 Connectors and Interconnects Connectors may be mounted to the printed board by soldering, welding, crimping, press fitting or other means. Leads may be extended through holes or contact maybe made to lands provided on the board. Holes may be plated through or simply drilled. The exact method will depend on the connector design.
