2  Spanish Explorer  With over 600 men, left Cuba in 1539, landed in Florida and marched north.  1540 he entered Georgia (close to Albany)  In search of gold  Killed thousands of Native Americans through fighting and disease.

3  Had an idea of a perfect world.  Wanted to settle in Georgia—create a perfect colony.  Did not have enough financial backing to carry out his plan.

4  Had the idea to found a colony for the “worthy poor” of Britain.  Asked King George II for a tract of land south of Carolina between the Altamaha and Savannah Rivers.  Along with 21 Trustees, he was granted a Charter to found Georgia in 1732.  First Governor of Georgia.

5  Jailed architect friend of Oglethorpe  Inspired Oglethorpe to create a better world for the “unfortunate” Britians.

6  Clergyman and Humanitarian  Also wanted to create a land for the “less fortunate” Britains.  Worked with Oglethorpe to create plans for founding Georgia.

7  Granted the land to Oglethorpe for Georgia.  The state of Georgia is named after him.  On June 7, 1732 he granted the Charter making Oglethorpe (and Trustees) responsible for establishing GA.

8  Chief of the Yamacraw Indians  Oglethorpe established friendship with Yamacraws through Tomochichi.  Chief Tomochichi allowed Oglethorpe’s ship, Ann, to land on Yamacraw bluff to establish a permanent settlement.  Chief and Oglethorpe stayed close friends until Chief’s death in 1739.

9  A Jewish medical doctor that arrived during the colony’s first medical crisis, after the original doctor died.

10  Leader of a group of German Protestants, that wanted to get out of Salzberg.  They asked to live in Georgia, and Oglethorpe let them settle in Ebenezer.  They spoke different language and kept to themselves.

11  Two religious leaders that came to Savannah with Oglethorpe in February 1736.  In Savannah, they established the first Sunday School in America.  They also founded the Methodist Church

12  Native American tribe in Georgia under Chief Tomochichi.  They lived in what is now present day Savannah.

14  The beginning of the New World settlements, in Virginia.  Named after King James I.  It was located near a swamp and the settlement had a big malaria outbreak.

15  Fort built at the mouth of the Altamaha River.  A Garrison that became the “warning point” for invaders.  It established the English presence in Georgia.  Abandoned in 1727 due to Indian Raids

16  Where the Colony of Georgia was founded February 12, 1733 by James Oglethorpe.

17  Oglethorpe designed this future city based on plans from his friend, Robert Castell.  Savannah originally was supposed to have 4 squares with twenty lots around each square.  Each square was to be used for political, social and religious gatherings.

18  The town where the Salzberg Protestants settled, 25 miles from Savannah.

19  The new location of the Salzberg Protestants after the moved from Ebenezer because of marshy and poor soil for crops.

20  The location where Oglethorpe moved the Salzbergs to.  Located on St. Simons Island
