Spanish Explorer With over 600 men, left Cuba in 1539, landed in Florida and marched north. 1540 he entered Georgia (close to Albany) In search of gold Killed thousands of Native Americans through fighting and disease.

Had an idea of a perfect world. Wanted to settle in Georgia—create a perfect colony. Did not have enough financial backing to carry out his plan.

Had the idea to found a colony for the “worthy poor” of Britain. Asked King George II for a tract of land south of Carolina between the Altamaha and Savannah Rivers. Along with 21 Trustees, he was granted a Charter to found Georgia in 1732. First Governor of Georgia.

Chief of the Yamacraw Indians Oglethorpe established friendship with Yamacraws through Tomochichi. Chief Tomochichi allowed Oglethorpe’s ship, Ann, to land on Yamacraw bluff to establish a permanent settlement. Chief and Oglethorpe stayed close friends until Chief’s death in 1739.

Oglethorpe designed this future city based on plans from his friend, Robert Castell. Savannah originally was supposed to have 4 squares with twenty lots around each square. Each square was to be used for political, social and religious gatherings.
