2 They are factors which influence learners' attitude to learning a language What are learner characteristics? Hi, my name is Alia and I am from Egypt. I’m 28 years old. I have been learning English for 10 years. I like studying hard and learning rules. Math and physics are my favorite subjects. I don’t like English much as all we do is chat – that is not serious learning. The learner characteristics -How they learn it -How they respond to different approaches -How successful they are

3 Learning styles Learning styles are the ways in which a learner naturally prefers to take in, process and remember information and skills. visual the learner learns best through watching and looking auditory the learner learns best through listening and hearing Kinesthetic the learner learns best through being physical, while moving or touching things Socialthe learner learns best through working with others individual the learner learns best through working alone

4 Learning strategies are the ways that learners use to learn language reflective the learner learns best when given time to consider choices impulsive the learner learns best when able to respond immediately analytic the learner learns best when given the opportunity to analyze things autonomous the learner likes to decide what he/she learns and how to learn Learning strategies

5 Learning strategies are the ways that learners use to learn language Learning strategies use color to highlight important points in text use multi-media (e.g. computers, videos, and filmstrips) read illustrated books read text out aloud work at a standing position move around to learn new things asking the teacher or others to give you feedback on your language use deciding what area of vocabulary you need to learn and then learning it deciding to write each new vocabulary item on a separate card and display it on your fridge paraphrasing.

6 Eye exercises – Brain Gym that help kids Lazy 8’s: (Draw or do it using thumb finger) Improves visual attention, balance, coordination, and eye mobility needed for reading Cross Crawls While standing, raise one leg slowly and have them use his/her opposite hand to hit that knee and hold for 5 seconds. Then switch sides. Perform 10 times on each leg.
