9 Flag The red stripe represents Sudan's struggle for independence and many other struggles, and the sacrifices of the country's martyrs The white represents peace, light and optimism. It also represents the White Flag League which was a nationalist group that rose up against colonial rule in 1924. The black represents Sudan; in Arabic 'Sudan' means black. It also represents the black flag of nationalists who fought colonial rule during the Kimokino Revolution, late in 19th century Green represents Islam, agriculture and the prosperity of the land.

10 Summary Sudan is in Northern Africa, bordering the Red Sea, between Egypt and Eritrea. It has 853 km of coastline, and the terrain is generally flat, featureless plains; with mountains in far south, northeast and west; and desert dominates the north.

14 Arts and culture This museum is located in Omdurman near Al-Mahdi's Tomb. It derived its name from the Khalifa Abdellah Al- Ta'aishi, the successor of Imam Mohamed Ahmed Al-Mahdi, who was officially residing at the very same place.

16 Food As for the south, a popular dish is a stew named (Kajaik), which is cooked of dried fish. It is added to the porridge, which is common throughout Sudan, (Aseeda) is made of sorghum. Sometimes natural margarine is added to the mixture. Northern Sudan is known for its simple cuisine, wheat flour has still remained the staple food for the people of the north who use it in making their main dish (Gourrassa).

17 Food Moukhbaza Mostly dairy products In the west, each tribal group had adopted different forms of food that are basically very simple. Milk and diary products are a fundamental component to the majority of the people. In the east, the most popular dish is the (Moukhbaza), which is made of banana paste. This part is greatly influenced by the Ethiopian taste and cuisine

18 Additional information  Type of government- Government of National Unity - the National Congress Party and Sudan People's Liberation Movement formed a power- sharing government under the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement; the NCP, which came to power by military coup in 1989, is the majority partner; the agreement stipulated national elections in 2009, but these were subsequently rescheduled; elections took place in April 2010 and the NCP was elected as the majority party; due to the CPA stipulations, there is also an autonomous government in Southern Sudan where SPLM holds the majority of positions.
