4 A holistic view of safety…
Human Infrastructure Normal driving Crash/Damage reduction Conflict Avoidance After collision Vehicle The driver is well informed and can stay alert. Technology helps the driver to handle the difficult situation. The car acts automatically to avoid a collision if the driver fails to react. The car’s safety systems help to reduce the crash energy in order to minimize the effect on the occupants. The car automatically calls for assistance and facilitates the rescue work. Knowing the challenge and where to go you need to define how to go there… For that you need a well structured map with a holistic view where you consider not only the vehicle but also the environment it is used in, the infrastructure, and most importantly the human being in or outside the vehicle. This also means that we can not do this on our own. We need to cooperate with authorities and society. More so to work with these three aspects when developing knowledge and technology in relation to crashes we have defined different phases of safety. You can se it as a time line in the aspect of a crash where we of course try to reduce the effect and the risk of injuries. Looking at the preventive phases where we work to avoid the collision we have different phases starting ms to seconds to minutes to hours or even day’s before a potential crash and these phases all have their different challenges. Of course what happens after a collision must also be taken into acoount.
